Spector still lacks new lawyer

Music legend Phil Spector told a judge Monday that he's seeking a new attorney to defend him for the retrial of his murder case but has yet to find the lawyer he wants.

The 67-year-old Spector was accompanied in court by Christopher Plourd, the only lawyer remaining from his six-attorney defense team. Spector already has tried unsuccessfully to hire two new lawyers.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Larry Fidler rebuffed Deputy Dist. Atty. Patrick Dixon when he asked to see sworn statements filed by Spector. Plourd had opposed disclosure, saying they related to Spector's effort to assemble a new defense team, and Fidler agreed.

Riordan will stay with Spector and focus on motions, Plourd said. "Mr. Spector has interviewed a number of lawyers," Plourd said. "Given the desire of the judge for him to find a lawyer who can be ready to try the case in four months, there are not many qualified lawyers who are available. He's having difficulty finding a lawyer with an open schedule, but he's making progress."

Clarkson's survivors have filed civil claims against Spector, and both her mother and sister were in court Monday.

In sparring over the issue of the new lawyer, Dixon said he would be forced to refer to him as "Mr. X." Plourd quickly responded by saying Dixon should not rule out the possibility of a "Ms. X."

Fidler scheduled a Nov. 6th (Tuesday) hearing in the case.

There was a production hearing yesterday in anticipation of the second season of that great summer hit show “The Phil Spector Trial”. Seems Spector hasn’t chosen his new “team” yet. Chris Plourd handed the judge 2 docu-ments that were ultimately sealed by the court which outlined the financial arrangements and defense attorneys that Spector is working on. Since the docu-ments were sealed due to their “financial nature”, I’m thinking they could be docu-ments relating to loans or such that Spector is trying to secure to pay for his new attorneys. Guess the legal community is wising up after the Shapiro fiasco and demanding their retainers up front and with contracts outlining payment schedules. And you kind of knew that Spector would be running out of money soon - you can’t be hiring 3 different wiz bang defense teams and some of the best testi-money defense forensic witnesses in the world and expect to be able to keep this level up every year. Something’s gotta give eventually, and it looks like Spector’s bank account is the next victim.

But, in the end, we still don’t know who Spector is in negotiations with, although it is reportedly “some unknown Californian attorney”, referred to in court yesterday only as “Mr. X” - (or “Mrs. X”, Plourd offered), and we probably won’t know until November 6th, the date of the next hearing.

So, another delay, and more delays likely, since whoever “Mr. or Mrs. X” is, they can certainly appeal to the judge for several delays to get “caught up” on the case. Fidler himself intimated yesterday that this would probably be likely when he took Spector’s waiver of the “60 day” trial date, and said that a new team would probably need more time to prepare. If the judge is expecting more delays, I think it’s safe to say that we can count on them.

Oh well, more time for us to reacquaint ourselves with the trial and the issues and evidence and players.

TrainSpotter posted Oct. 23 on "Spector Trial" Message Board that the next Hearing would be November 6th. From the Sprocket-Blog cited, it will be at 10:00 a.m. "Sandi Gibbons, spokesperson from the DAs office....indicated that this would be the first of many continuances," it also cites.
Except for TrainSpotter's post, we should start anew when the Spector Retrial begins in earnest -- with Marta, of course!

Does anyone know if Marta and Loni will be covering the hearing today?

Anakerie, The best I can do to help answer your question about the Spector Hearing this morning, is to keep checking in! Court TV web-site has not indicated for sure of an available feed for the 10AM PST hearing? (You may also want to check CTV live, as well?) We will have to wait and see!
